Reading Rover's Sound Check is designed to help parents, educators and other professionals evaluate a child's ability to recognize phonemes, the smallest unit of sound in language that can affect meaning. Specifically, the Sound Check measures phonemic awareness by asking a child to distinguish between words that differ by the initial sound. Reading Rover recommends his sound check for children ages 4 and up.
After a child completes the Sound Check, Rover calculates a percentage score. Each score corresponds with one of three colors: red, yellow or green. The color scale represents the child's estimated chance of having reading difficulties, from little (green) to possible (yellow) to probable (red).
These results are accompanied by a list of resources including software, books, and Websites to help teachers and parents develop and improve a child's language or reading skills.
